Dr. Geoffrey Rosenthal, MD, PhD

Geoffrey Rosenthal MD, PhD is a board-certified pediatric cardiologist and epidemiologist who has provided care for children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease, engaged in collaborative research involving cardiovascular and other health endpoints, developed curricula in cardiovascular sciences and public health, and mentored students, trainees and faculty. Dr. Rosenthal was instrumental in the development of the Children’s Heart Program at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital, which rose to national recognition in US News and World Report during his tenure for its excellent, externally validated clinical outcomes.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Rosenthal was on the Executive Committee for the Big Ten Cardiac COVID-19 Response, working with Sports Medicine experts and university presidents at each of the Big Ten universities to reduce the risk of sudden death in athletes. Dr. Rosenthal facilitated clinical and research collaboration across the UMD and University of Maryland, Baltimore campuses to inform safe return to play guidelines for athletes with COVID-19 infection. This collaboration of outstanding Sports Medicine  physicians and innovative bioscience researchers was supported through a generous MPower grant, and through the leadership and engagement of President Darryll Pines (UMD) and President Bruce Jarrell, MD (UMB).

Dr. Rosenthal has served as the Sports Cardiologist for the Maryland Terrapins and the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers. In addition to these roles, Dr. Rosenthal serves the American Academy of Pediatrics as the Chair of the Committee on Federal Government Affairs, advocating on Capitol Hill and with Executive Branch agencies for health policies that benefit children.
