Emergency and After Hours Care
Please use the following resources for after hours care or in the case of an emergency. If you have a *medical or mental health emergency* and need an ambulance, call 911 or the UMPD at 301.405.3333.
Emergencies can include but are not limited to:
- Chest pain accompanied by sweating, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, radiating pain that moves to the arm or neck, dizziness, or feeling that your heart is beating irregularly or too fast
- Choking
- Severe bleeding that doesn't stop after 15 minutes of direct pressure
- Fainting
- Broken or displaced bones
- Swallowing poison
- Burns
- Suddenly not being able to walk, speak, or move a portion of your body
- Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing
- An immediate urge to kill yourself or others

- Behavioral Health Services is able to continue to treat existing students who reside in the state of Maryland. New patients who reside in Maryland can also schedule an appointment for an intake. We are not treating any new patients or existing patients who reside outside of the state of Maryland.
- If you are experiencing a psychiatric emergency call 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department.
- Current patients may contact their therapist or prescriber by leaving a secure message at myuhc.umd.edu or calling 301.314.8106 for refills or other concerns.
- Please complete and submit the UMD Behavioral Health Services Informed Consent for Teletherapy/Telehealth form below:
Urgent mental health concerns, when the Health Center is closed:
- Call the University of Maryland Counseling Center at 301.314.7651
- Call the University of Maryland HELP Center at 301.314.HELP
- Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1.800.273.TALK or the Maryland Crisis Hotline at 1.800.422.0009. These resources are both available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Call 911 or the University of Maryland Police Department at 301.405-3333
- Go to an area hospital.

Urgent Care Centers
During the hours that the UHC is closed, you can consider a local Urgent Care Center. If you don’t have your own transportation, consider a local taxi or ride-sharing service. UMD does not provide transportation to after-hours medical facilities.

Inclement Weather Notice
The University Health Center’s hours may vary during weather-related campus closures. If the UHC is able to open during a campus closure event, then they will only be available for urgent visits and will operate with limited hours. If the UHC is unable to open, then some previously scheduled in-person visits will be converted to telemedicine visits (if possible). In addition, other appointments may be rescheduled or canceled in the event the UHC is unable to open during a campus closure event.
