Acupuncturist

Dr. Sherlynn Shakir is the Acupuncture Coordinator for the University Health Center. She holds a BS in Human Services, from New Hampshire College, an MA in Psychology and a Psy.D., in Clinical Psychology from Western American University. Dr. Shakir completed her Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Charter Behavioral Health Systems of San Diego, CA. She also completed a year at Southwest College of Naturopath Medicine before transferring and completing both a MSTOM (Master of Science Traditional Oriental Medicine) and DACM (Doctorate Acupuncture Chinese Medicine) at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, California. She was previously employed with the University of Maryland Health Center and the Journey Within Wellness Center as an Acupuncturist. Dr. Shakir has a diverse and multi-faceted background which includes treating patients within a Psychiatric Hospital (Charter API), Private Practice (Psychiatric Health System, and Cervantes Institute), Veteran’s Clinic, Rady’s Children Hospital, Genesis Project, and clinical consultant for Escondido Youth Encounters, Coalition for Child Adolescents and Parents, New Options for Violent Actions, and Counseling Insights Inc. 

She also served as the Executive Director for The Salvation Army’s Center of Hope in West Palm Beach, servicing 85+ clients, and managing a staff of 45 including 25 direct reports and 20 volunteers. She provided leadership training, evaluated staff performance, and executed annual operating budgets over $3 million dollars. Dr. Shakir designed, developed, and coordinated clinical programs and activities for homeless individuals and those recovering from drug/alcohol addiction. The specialized services also included adult education, individual and group counseling, medical screenings, drug education and relapse prevention. She also administered and prepared grants and supervised fundraising events to promote public awareness of and support for community programs.

Dr. Shakir also served as an Adjunct Professor teaching Abnormal and General Psychology at
Rowan-Cabarrus, Coleman, and Kings Community College. Her hobbies include reading,
dancing, hiking, gardening and spending time with family.
