Insurance and Billing
The University Health Center provides healthcare and resources to all students, faculty, and staff with and without health insurance plans. There are costs associated with many of the services provided.
This page is intended to help explain insurance requirements for undergraduate and graduate students, information on the Student Health Insurance Plan, explanation of insurance-related terminology, frequently asked questions, and information regarding fees and billing.
The University Health Center recognizes that a patient's access to health insurance and the costs of services may impact a person’s well-being and healthcare decision process.
We aim to provide transparency regarding costs for visitors who elect to “self-pay” (or choose not to bill the visit to their health insurance plan or do not have health insurance).
In Network Insurance Plans
The University Health Center is currently in network with the PPO and EPO plans of the following insurance companies:

Th University Health Center is currently in network with ONLY the PPO and Open Access Plus products of:
- Cigna
Insurance Plans with Restrictions
The University Health Center can file to Maryland Medicaid plans for our registered students only. Unfortunately, out of state Medicaid plans have no benefits at the University Health Center.
For United Healthcare MDIPA or OPTIMUM CHOICE, patients will need to call the member services number on their insurance card and designate the University Health Center as their PCP (Primary Care Provider) for visits at the University Health Center to be considered for coverage.
Note, Lab and X-ray restrictions apply. The Registration office will offer more details.
The University Health Center is able to file office visits for the Blue Choice HMO product of CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield. It is recommended but not required that patients with this insurance plan name the University Health Center as their PCP.
Note, Lab and X-ray restrictions apply. The Registration office will offer more details.
Unfortunately, the UHC cannot file to the following insurance plans:
- Medicare (if Medicare is the primary insurance, the UHC is also unable to file to the patient's secondary plan)
- Kaiser Permanente
- Out of state Medicaid
- Some HMO plans (if you have an HMO plan, please call your insurance's customer service number to verify that you have benefits at the UHC)
Patients with an insurance plan that is out of network are advised to call their insurance company's customer service number to verify that they will have out of network benefits at the UHC.
Many plans do NOT cover services outside of their geographical areas.
If a patient's insurance does not cover costs, they may still be seen and charged as Self-Pay. Registered students may receive a discount on the final office visit fee. There is no discount for lab, x-ray, procedures, medical devices, and medications.
Enrolled in Student Health Insurance Plan:
No co-pays, co-insurance or deductible when seen at the University Health Center. Most services at the UHC are covered including x-rays and lab tests. There is a co-pay for medication. See Summary of Benefits and Coverage for additional information.
Have participating “In-Network” Insurance:
Patient is responsible for applicable copay, co-insurance and/or deductible.
Have non-participating “Out-of-Network” Insurance:
Patient responsibility for visits filed to insurance with out of network benefits is determined by their insurance company. The patient responsibility may include a co-pay, coinsurance, and/or deductibles. Charges not covered by insurance are the patient’s responsibility. The office visit discount rate is offered to registered students only and does not discount any lab work, x-ray services, medications, procedures, or medical devices.
It is very important that patients call their insurance company to verify coverage before visiting the UHC.
No insurance and/or Self-Pay:
A typical self-pay office visit fee (which does not include any procedures, lab work, medications, medical devices, or x-ray services) will range from $50 -$175. The office visit discount rate is offered to registered students only and does not discount any lab work, x-ray services, medications, procedures, or medical devices.
Charges are subject to change without notice for the following services:
- Behavioral Health
- Nutrition
- Individual Meditation sessions
- Acupuncture
- Massage Therapy
- Testing for HIV/STI
- Travel clinic
Mandatory Health Insurance
Each academic year, undergraduate and graduate students meeting specific criteria must either enroll in or waive the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).
