The University Health Center is excited to offer telemedicine visits for our students and employees.  You can now see a medical provider using online services for many common medical conditions.  All appointments will utilize the UMD Zoom application to maintain a secure network.

Appointments

Telemedicine visits with our highly trained medical staff including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants must be scheduled ahead of time by calling (301) 314-8184 

 

To be eligible for a Telemedicine visit:

  • You must be an established patient with a prior in-person visit at the UHC within the past 3 years and have access to the MyUHC portal to securely communicate with your provider before and after your appointment.

  • You must have the Telemedicine Informed Consent form completed, signed, and returned as instructed by registration staff prior to your appointment.

  • Be physically located in the State of Maryland during your visit.  This allows the UHC to remain compliant with state and federal telehealth regulations.

Prior to your telemedicine visit, please ensure the following:

  • You are familiar with how to navigate through the Zoom application
  • You are in a private location
  • You have proper identification
  • You have a list of your medications available, both prescription and over-the-counter
  • If you have a thermometer or blood pressure cuff, please have them available to assist your provider with your visit.
  • Consider using headphones or earbuds to increase privacy and decrease background noise

What is Telemedicine?

Telemedicine is a provider appointment which uses both audio and visual technology to provide clinical services from a remote location, allowing medical care in a convenient and secure environment.

 

Who is eligible for telemedicine?

All currently enrolled students along with University employees who have been previously seen at the University Health Center within the past 3 years are eligible for telemedicine visits.  All patients are required to be physically located in the state of Maryland at the time of their telemedicine visit.

 

What are the benefits of telemedicine?

Telemedicine allows you to:

  • Continue your relationship with your medical provider
  • Remain in your own safe and secure location while addressing common ailments treated at the University of Maryland Health Center 
  • Schedule medical visits at a time that is convenient for you between classes or other obligations
  • Save money on transportation and parking 
  • Save time by limiting  my travel to the UHC

What types of medical concerns can be seen in a telemedicine visit?

Please call the UHC appointment line at (301) 314-8184 and a registration personnel will determine if your medical concern can be addressed by a telemedicine visit. Some examples include but are not limited to:

  • STI testing for those without symptoms
  • Rashes
  • Acne
  • Birth Control Refills
  • High Cholesterol follow up visit
  • High Blood Pressure follow up visit for those who have a blood pressure cuff
  • Thyroid disorder follow up
  • Insomnia
  • Chest x-ray review after a positive TB test (Quantiferon Gold)
  • PrEP initial or follow up visit
  • Hair loss
  • Gender Affirming Care follow up visit

How do I schedule a telemedicine visit?

Call our registration staff at (301) 314-8184 and they will be happy to guide you through the appointment process.

 

Will my insurance cover telemedicine?

Once the medical concern provided is accepted as appropriate for telemedicine, your health insurance will be reviewed by a registration personnel. At this time, the UHC is participating with SHIP (Student Health Insurance Plan), Blue Cross Blue Shield/CareFirst, United Healthcare, Aetna and Cigna for telemedicine visits.

 

What if I don’t have insurance, or my insurance doesn’t cover telemedicine visits?

There is a discounted fee for self payment.  For more information please visit the Billing and Costs section of our website

 

 

How will I be billed for a telemedicine visit?

Your insurance company will be billed in the same manner as if you were seen for an in-person visit.  Insurance copays and deductibles may apply.

 

What hours are available for telemedicine visits?

Telemedicine availability coincides with the University Health Center hours of operation with the exception of Saturday.

How do I know my telemedicine visit will be private and secure?

The Zoom application that the University of Maryland uses is deemed compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and is considered private and secure.

 

 

How do I prepare for my telemedicine visit?

Prior to your telemedicine visit please ensure: 

  • You are familiar with how to navigate through the Zoom application.
  • You are in a private location.
  • You have a photo ID, preferably your University of Maryland ID.
  • You have a list of your medications available, both prescription and over-the-counter, or have your medication bottles with you.
  • Consider using headphones or earbuds to increase privacy and decrease background noise
  • If you have a thermometer or blood pressure cuff, please have them available to assist your provider with your visit

What happens if I miss my appointment?

We would appreciate advance notice if you are unable to keep your appointment. 

 

What if I need lab work completed?

If your provider orders lab work, this can be completed at the UHC lab or at a local LabCorp office.  If you plan to have your lab work completed at the UHC, please contact the UHC laboratory in advance at (301) 314-8184.
