UMD Mandatory Insurance Requirement FAQ's

This page is for addressing frequently asked questions about the mandatory insurance policy for students. 

Before scheduling an appointment, patients should contact their insurance company's member services department to ask if medical services at the Health Center would be considered for coverage. The number to call can usually be found on the back of the insurance card.

The Health Center staff would be more than happy to assist with any insurance or billing questions.

Don't hesitate to give us a call if you would like to update your insurance, have general questions about your commercial insurance, have questions about the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), or have questions about your bill/billing.

Understanding the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) Requirement

Each academic year, the University requires that all eligible students either enroll in or waive the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Eligible students who do not submit an approved waiver by the deadline will be automatically enrolled.
 

If you enroll, the $2,939 annual premium is split between two installments:

Located on the ground floor of the Health Center, room 0106, the Occupational Health Unit provides a number of work-related services to employees. Services include pre-placement physical examinations, administration of work-related immunizations, Tuberculosis (tb) screening and testing, medical surveillance for hazardous material exposure and hearing conservation, Department of Transportation (DOT) certificates, and consultation and education on occupational health concerns. Occupational Health works closely with the

The Faculty Staff Assistance Program offers monthly Lunch & Learn sessions. Thirty minute virtual workshops about a variety of topics pertaining to personal and work-related wellness. These are open to all staff and faculty in all departments. See below for details.
